Summary

The Expanse meets Game of Thrones in J。 S。 Dewes' fast-paced, sf adventure The Last Watch, where a handful of soldiers stand between humanity and annihilation。

The Divide。

It’s the edge of the universe。

Now it’s collapsing—and taking everyone and everything with it。

The only ones who can stop it are the Sentinels—the recruits, exiles, and court-martialed dregs of the military。

At the Divide, Adequin Rake, commanding the Argus, has no resources, no comms—nothing, except for the soldiers that no one wanted。

They're humanity's only chance。

The Last Watch is the first in a new SF series following miscreant Legionnaires ordered to patrol the edge of the universe。 As others have pointed out some of the science seems a bit dodgy, especially what appears to be a 2D rather than 3D universe, but overall there are some very neat concepts here, including exploration of large alien technical objects。 It definitely has some great characters and a good plot。 Easy to see the comparisons that have been made to the Expanse series。

The Last Watch gets 3 stars because it did what it had intended to do and it did it well。 If you are looking for an thrilling space opera with plenty of imminent "oh-my-we're-going-to-die!" moments, this is a good book for you。 Now, here's the thing, I just did not care about the characters at all。 I only remember four characters in the book, and two of these - Adequin and Calavan, the main characters, felt more like sci-fi tropes than actual people to me。 I'm a character-driven reader so, while The Last Watch gets 3 stars because it did what it had intended to do and it did it well。 If you are looking for an thrilling space opera with plenty of imminent "oh-my-we're-going-to-die!" moments, this is a good book for you。 Now, here's the thing, I just did not care about the characters at all。 I only remember four characters in the book, and two of these - Adequin and Calavan, the main characters, felt more like sci-fi tropes than actual people to me。 I'm a character-driven reader so, while I appreciate the action and world-building, they do not really scratch the space opera-itch for me。 That being said, I will try to read the second (and last? I think?) book。I do have to say that the addition of (view spoiler)[time ripples (hide spoiler)] threw me off a bit (I just dislike it when sci-fi books have (view spoiler)[time related things。 They are just confusing to me and I never get them (hide spoiler)]。 Marking spoilers because this is sort of a big thing, but it's just a common thing in sci-fi that I sadly don't like (this is 100% not the book's fault, but my own)。If I could rate J。S。 Dewes, though, I would give her ten stars because she is not only a Mass Effect fan but a Kaidan Alenko stan。 It's good to know I'm not alone in this world。 。。。more

This action-packed sci fi book takes considerable time to acclimate yourself to what’s really going on- but it’s well worth the wait for the larger revelations as to what may be causing the shrinking of the universe, the corrupt politics of both the militaristic state and opportunistic royal families, as well as the moving backstories of the main characters which helps you finally truly care about them。 Welcome to The Divide- the edge of our universe, which for millennia has stopped expanding an This action-packed sci fi book takes considerable time to acclimate yourself to what’s really going on- but it’s well worth the wait for the larger revelations as to what may be causing the shrinking of the universe, the corrupt politics of both the militaristic state and opportunistic royal families, as well as the moving backstories of the main characters which helps you finally truly care about them。 Welcome to The Divide- the edge of our universe, which for millennia has stopped expanding and now seems to be shrinking and collapsing back on itself。 In the process, it’s destroying the Sentinels and their fleet, who has been stationed at the far reaches of the Universe to keep a lookout for the return of the Viators, an alien race that humanity battled for thousands of years before supposedly them killing off。 The Sentinels are a ragtag bunch- military officers being punished or outcast with a crew of misfits and the court-martialed。 Heading up one of the ships, the Argus, fierce commander Adequin Rake (she) has established strict military discipline to keep her flotilla of bored soldiers in line。 A hero in the war with the aliens, Rake seems out of place in exile。 Joining the crew of the shipped is the exiled heir of one of the most powerful royal families: Cavalon Mercer。 He’s got three Phd’s in engineering, but his only fighting experience to date has been bar brawls and he specializes in wisecracks。 He’s fought against the oppressive greed and politics of the family’s patriarch which has landed him shipped off to The Divide where he cannot cause any more trouble。 Combining Adequin’s leadership and bravery with Cavalon’s intellect and growing loyalty, the survivors of the Argus work to solve the mystery behind the collapse of The Divide and its implications about both the alien Viators as well as pernicious underpinnings in their own reining military government。 By the end, I felt, “Bring on the Sequel!!”- excited to see the deepening revelations and bonds between the crew, and for more thrills in a twisty thriller plot。 Thanks for NetGalley for an advanced reader’s copy。 。。。more

Good Science FictionThe imagination used to see him names for the SpaceForce, Ships and Planets was based on a history incorporated in this story。 I not only enjoyed this book, but I found the science believable and possible。 The author balances the use of power equally and designed a system of cooperation, respect and friendships。 Well done! I would like to see this as a minnie series。 Also, I can recommend this book to a ride audience from older kids to older adults。

This was an outstanding book! Refreshingly original with an excellent story and even better characters。 JSD knocked it over the divide with this one, am I cannot wait to read the next one in the series, and hopefully many more forthcoming novels。 Have not been this excited about a series since the Old Man's War Trilogy -- yes, this is just as good。 Give it a go if you have not already done so, you will not be disappointed! Told from 2 main perspectives- the Captain (Executor) Rake a war hero, and new recruit (Oculus) Cavelon Meyers- a ostracized, over educated but sheltered royal。 A sentinel ship in the edge of the universe finds itself scrambling to survive when the edge starts to come toward them bringing time shifts and destruction。 I really enjoyed this book。 A unique sci fi premise with the best parts of Star Trek/Firefly flavor。 A diverse group with interesting tech and problems to solve。 Good character deve Told from 2 main perspectives- the Captain (Executor) Rake a war hero, and new recruit (Oculus) Cavelon Meyers- a ostracized, over educated but sheltered royal。 A sentinel ship in the edge of the universe finds itself scrambling to survive when the edge starts to come toward them bringing time shifts and destruction。 I really enjoyed this book。 A unique sci fi premise with the best parts of Star Trek/Firefly flavor。 A diverse group with interesting tech and problems to solve。 Good character development and a steady pace。 。。。more

The Last Watch is often compared to contemporary sci-fi epics like The Expanse, but its actual character is much harder to pin down。 It shakes out the box of puzzle pieces of standard tropes and puts them together in a way that felt novel, even if you've seen the components a million times。 There is a prince, though the main society is more of a technological oligarchy so his standing in the social order is non-traditional。 There is a tough ship captain, but she was more of a front-line fighter The Last Watch is often compared to contemporary sci-fi epics like The Expanse, but its actual character is much harder to pin down。 It shakes out the box of puzzle pieces of standard tropes and puts them together in a way that felt novel, even if you've seen the components a million times。 There is a prince, though the main society is more of a technological oligarchy so his standing in the social order is non-traditional。 There is a tough ship captain, but she was more of a front-line fighter who was promoted to captain of a derelict outpost in order to save face in light of a "failure" on her part。 Against this all is a hodge-podge of motley soldiers and social dissidents exiled to the outpost in order to keep them out of everyone's hair。 The situation changes when very dire things begin happening at the sleepy edge of the universe and these misfits are the only people around to prevent the end of the world。The Last Watch takes a little while to find its gear, as Dewes leans a little bit into stock characterization to do some heavy lifting while the world of the book is being established。 Quickly, though, the main characters assert their own personalities and become a pleasure to be around。 While the book certainly has its eyes on a series, it establish enough of a foundation and self-contained story arc that I enjoyed the first outing and would be pleased to do another tour of duty with these unlikely heroes。 。。。more

Nothing like the expanse。 Nothing like GoT。 No science or physics, poor characterisation, ludicrous plot。

Shyam Kannan

Suspenseful space opera with real character depth, a plot that unfolds in twists and turns at just the right pace, and a great created future universe that is at once compelling and fantastic。

It made me laugh, it made me cry, and I fell in love with every single character。 Throw all that into a fast-paced intelligent plot and it’s impossible not to devour。Eternally glad the sequel is already out, because I cannot go another moment without a dose of our snarky exiled prince and lovable ex-war hero。 Time to dive back into the Divide! “Do we need to have one of those conversations about what ‘on three’ means?” - Cavalon 😂

Billed as The Expanse meets Game of Thrones, and a pretty accurate description for the tale of the poor sods posted at the literal edge of the universe who are tasked to keep the alien boogeymen out。 Fast paced read and a lot of fun。

Recommended。 This book really worked for me。 Explores big ideas like universe expansion and collapse, has pulpy sci-fi combat with ship boardings and scavenger pirates and blasters, has dramatic set pieces, and has big hero moments。 It's an action driven scifi so there were a number of red shirt characters, and the support cast were more or less the same type of person。 That said, the two main characters Cavalon and Rake were great and got the opportunity to really grow over the course of the bo Recommended。 This book really worked for me。 Explores big ideas like universe expansion and collapse, has pulpy sci-fi combat with ship boardings and scavenger pirates and blasters, has dramatic set pieces, and has big hero moments。 It's an action driven scifi so there were a number of red shirt characters, and the support cast were more or less the same type of person。 That said, the two main characters Cavalon and Rake were great and got the opportunity to really grow over the course of the book。For a novel this had a lot of "visual" story telling, as if it started out as a screenplay first。 I think it would have no trouble transitioning to a tv series or movie。 。。。more

A bit too much action and dire events (we need a LITTLE breathing room) and Cav and Rake were pretty stock characters, but the story was imaginative and enjoyable。

This was next level good and I need the sequel ASAP。 Loved every person on this misfit cast and so much of what they go through - on an emotional level at least - was relatable。

Great book, great storyThis book Started out slow but rapidly got better, I'm looking forward to the next one。 The only reason it got four instead of five stars is its CONFUSING with all the Time jumps and people popping in and out。 I did not see where that added all that much to the storyline。 Great book, great storyThis book Started out slow but rapidly got better, I'm looking forward to the next one。 The only reason it got four instead of five stars is its CONFUSING with all the Time jumps and people popping in and out。 I did not see where that added all that much to the storyline。 。。。more

Well I don't agree with the blurb The Expanse meets Game of Thrones - it certainly didn't encapsulate the epicness of either of those books。This was a good read that I really enjoyed though at first I was a bit too disappointed with the Sentinals, they were rather "nice for a bunch of criminals, exiles and military dregs。。。 however。。。 in the last chapter there may be a reason for that。I'll be interested in reading the next book in the series, I'm interested in knowing more about the Viators, and Well I don't agree with the blurb The Expanse meets Game of Thrones - it certainly didn't encapsulate the epicness of either of those books。This was a good read that I really enjoyed though at first I was a bit too disappointed with the Sentinals, they were rather "nice for a bunch of criminals, exiles and military dregs。。。 however。。。 in the last chapter there may be a reason for that。I'll be interested in reading the next book in the series, I'm interested in knowing more about the Viators, and the politics within the Legion back home in the Core。 。。。more
